YWCA - Jericho Branch

The YWCA of Palestine branch in Jericho was established in the year 1952 at Aqbet Jaber Refugee Camp, in order to serve the large number of Palestinian refugees at the camp. Sewing, embroidery, and literacy and educational courses were among the training programs offered in coordination with humanitarian organizations like the Red Cross and UNRWA in an attempt to provide help and assistance for the thousands of refugees who were forced to flee their homes. Bazaars and exhibitions were held every year to help raise funds for the training courses provided at the branch.

The Food Production Project is the primary project carried out at the branch. This project is an income generating and job creating one that offers training and employment opportunities for underprivileged women in the Jericho area. Those food products have gained recognition and popularity in the local market since they are produced in a traditional / home made way; an all natural ingredients without artificial preservatives. The line of products includes  over 35 different types of food products such as pure honey, dried herbs, Arabic pastries among other things.

Other Programs and Activities at the Jericho Branch include:

  • Hair dressing training program for young women.

  • Training courses on food production.

  • Different youth and children programs and summer camps.
